ESU II Downs Centenary in OpenerPublished on: September 29, 2011
On Saturday night, ESU II got the victory against a newly improved Centenary team. The Warriors downed Centenary 8-4 in the season opener and came away with their first win of the season on the road at Aspen Ice Center. Centenary College is a newly added team to the Delaware Valley Hockey Conference and are playing their first season in the ACHA. The Warriors opened up the scoring in the first period four and a half minutes into the game on a breakaway backhand goal by Tom Fallon on a pass from RJ Zeleny. Forty five seconds later, another goal was scored for the Warriors on the stick of Jim McGinley. Twenty seconds later, the Warriors found the back of the net once again thanks to a one time goal by Mike Taormina on a pass from RJ Zeleny. The Warriors lead the game 3-0 for most of the first period until Centenary scored there first goal on a shot from David Kobletz. The Warriors would then answer back with two goals from Jim McGinley and Ed Nufrio to bring them to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period. To start the scoring in the second period, Centenary would find the net nearly ten minutes in thanks to a goal by Kyle Kralievich. Craig Nielsen would go “top shelf” two minutes later to bring the game to a 6-2 Warriors lead. These would be the only two goals scored in the second period. Centenary would come out strong in the third period with two goals by David Kobletz and Anthony Decosta to bring the game within three goals. The Warriors, however, would battle back with two goals by Jim McGinley to ensure the Warriors victory. McGinley had a total of four goals in the game and help to lead the Warriors to the win. At the end of the game, the Warriors out shot the Cyclones 53-30. ESU II will play Saturday, October 1st at Mid Hudson Civic Arena in Poughkeepsie, New York where they take on SUNY New Paltz for their second game of the season.
